Excerpt…(From ‘Borders of Betrayal’ by CO)

Posted on

Cara studied the copy paper one more time, and walked away from the looming machine. Always the perfectionist, she would have to be content with advanced technology. Were they not supposed to be better than humans these days she grimaced as she sat down at her desk. From her corner of the office, she could at that vantage point observe the flurry of activities without being a part of it. At least she preferred not to be involved in office politics so early in this career. The fact that she had successfully passed the ‘Numeric Series’ exam, did not mean this was her calling. She needed to be in a searching mode, until that peace settled in. Or until God showed her otherwise, or maybe He had already…

She saw her supervisor walk by briskly for the umpteenth time, all the while avoiding eye contact. Cara knew she was a moody woman, who walked around with her head bent most of the time; despite all the success ‘Wall Street’ had brought her . But her drastic attitude change these two days were a thing of marvel for the new ‘Emerging Market Assistant Analyst’. The last time Leslie had spoken to Cara was to thank her for her prompt input for the Eastern Asian Companies IPO pitch. This project was huge in the billions of dollars of expected profit margin. Every one worked long hours to make sure the brochure was ready to be shipped to Hong Kong before the dreaded deadline. The final tension revolved around the necessary ‘pitch’ to get the IPO rolling. Most of the Analysts and Floor traders, had a knack for numbers; at least when it came to their profit. This new venture into that  Conservative culture had to be just right. Not crass, lewd or aggressive as is prevalent in the Western culture. Unfortunately, that was the way the language in ‘Wall Street’ seemed to be establishing itself these days.

Cara had curiously taken a look at the outline, just to see what progress they were having. She did not expect to be a dent in anyone’s expectation; she was barely with the company three weeks now. Surprisingly to everyone else but familiar to her, she quickly formed a string of words in her mind. After jotting it down on a piece of paper, she figured she might just as well show it to Leslie for whatever it was worth. Leslie’s delighted but rare squeal was all Cara needed to hear. She was happy to have been of help and made someone’s day. Her devotional reading this morning had harped on being a blessing to someone else.

Reminiscing on the events of the past couple of days left Cara’s mind in a quandary as to why Leslie was near loathsome. A hurried and loud tap on her desk, interrupted her reverie and   made her swing her head away from the computer screen to see Tom the new intern who distributed Inter-office mail along with gossip beaming at her. “So are you going  princess?” He asked with that boyish grin and perpetual wisp of hair covering his left eye. “Going where?” Cara asked with unfeigned interest. “To the Grande Ball at the Ritzy Restaurant of course, every one got an invite.” He swooned with hands on his hips, head tilted to the side and eyebrows raised. As if to say a yes or no answer should not be that hard. “Oh…” was all Cara could manage as an explanation and embarrassment all dawned on her at the same time.

 Tom did not notice her discomfort, as he kept rambling on. She tried to tune back into the one-sided conversation but to no avail. She hoped her shock induced disorientation was not obvious. As she tried again to make sense of what he was saying.  “… so, he was so impressed with the perfect pitch, he decided to throw a party for the New York Office. And he probably will announce Leslie’s promotion tonight.” “Wait, wait a minute.” Cara stuttered as she tried to take it all in. “Who was impressed with what and why?” “Oh boy,” Tom sighed exasperatedly. “Do I always have to give you the obvious scoop around here?” he rolled his eyes and continued. “Well rumor has it and it has been confirmed that the CEO Blaine Roberts and his billion dollar stock holders liked Leslie’s IPO pitch so much, he promoted her and we will be celebrating at the Ritzy Restaurant tonight.” You will agree,” Tom continued “when you see a copy of the pitch on our website. It was real classy and straight on point.” “Here let me show you,” Tom offered as he almost knocked her and the chair over reaching for the computer.

With a few strokes on the keyboard and high-speed blinks the screen came alive at the same time recognition dawned. And right before Cara’s very own eyes were the exact words she had written for Leslie to consider as a spring-board for the ‘IPO pitch’.

In loving memorial...

The ‘Fleet is in!!!… and so is this writer.

Most people do not really know what it is they are celebrating on ‘Memorial Day’. They just see it as a day off from work, or the holiday that heralds and ushers in the summer. Howbeit the much dreaded (by me) scorching heat, and the much-anticipated and sizzling barbeques. It is just another day in the history of the country. But I know and have seen a group of people who know exactly what it is all about, because it has hit close to home. They diligently remember to commemorate and judiciously recite what it all means to them. Others who are not so directly affected move on to their individual or corporate pursuits, however trivial or crucial. Proverbs 15:15

It is a known fact that unless things affect people directly and precisely, they would really not bother with it or make a conscious effort to understand its repercussion and effect. Notice I said affect, as in ‘it happened upon them’, as opposing to their ‘headiness’ (or stubborn act) dragged along some consequences with it. Psalm 107:17. Thus you will have a married woman, wondering why a widow is still grieving a year after she has buried her husband. Or you have those residing in the palace, irritated by what they consider to be a bunch of paupers complaining and disturbing their peace. 2 Samuel 22:28, Job 6:14.

I once heard a beautiful African Gospel song (Ibo to be precise), that simply states: “What if men were God…” I shiver and shudder at that abominable thought. Because I for starters would have been two feet tall and headless. Or better still, would have had a small head with six eyes…gruesome! So being that we have a good and just God, everyone and I mean everyone will have a go at ‘Sorrow-ville‘ at some point in their lifetime. So next time there is an uncanny and evil desire to look disdainfully at those ‘the Lord Himself has afflicted’, we do well to crouch our attitude and reconsider… Psalm 18:27

A trip to ‘The Arlington Cemetery’ had me not only almost pass out from heat exhaustion, but appreciate the ‘Unknown Soldier’. You see he fought and gave his life for what we now enjoy as barbecue and bustling activities with family members. Sometimes he may get a bouquet or two tossed his way, or an empathetic head shake every now and then. But I am glad that there is that ‘Eternal Flame’ they call it, that is never put out and the faithful supply of a soldier to stand over his grave at all times. It means he may be nameless now, but he is never forgotten.

Last November, my best friend nonchalantly informed me that her kids would be having a function at their school to honor the Veterans. So on ‘Veterans Day’, I told her I would go with them. To which she wondered why and marveled that I had nothing else to do. I simply told her I was a ‘Spiritual Veteran’ that is why I was going. The literal/physical demonic confrontations, onslaughts and attacks, not to mention their lingering and debilitating aftermath effect earned me some bloody badges from the ‘Captain of the Lord of Hosts’ Himself. Let him who has a counter argument or is my adversary step forward…

I can still hear her (my best-friend) characteristic loud bellowing and banshee-like laughter ringing in my ears seven months later. Her husband thinks its hilarious (true love), and I do think it is too. I just love that she laughs at my jokes, she has been doing that for decades. She was not mocking me, just reminding herself that her friend/sister is one of a kind.

With utmost respect, I salute the fallen and departed Soldiers of all legitimate wars, both civil, spiritual and what have you. Hebrews 11:37. The blood and sweat of their sacrifice is never silenced; therefore our gratitude and appreciation should never be.

He’s got the Whole World…

I'll stick with you.

We got your back girl!

The title phrase is not just a children’s Sunday school song. It is an

May we have your autograph please?

incredible reality that I have

come to appreciate more and more these days. The obvious fact that

everything, everyone and every situation is in the mighty and capable hands of God. I know it is hard to believe sometimes, when you have something hanging over your head, and you wonder why God will not rid you of it as quickly as possible. You know He has the power and the resources and even time belongs to Him, but still your obnoxious little burden remains.

Lately, God has been showing me another aspect of ‘The whole World in His Hands’ phenomenon. Not too long ago, I went through a phase where the people I expected to be there for me, not only were not there but they happily volunteered to sell me to the highest or lowest bidder. They had no special stake in the bidder, nor was the reward ‘something to write home about’. It was just a spitefully inspired and selfish act. Of which, I am not sure that they realized the ultimate ramification of their acts. The devil always sounds enticing, alluring and seduces with his suggestions. But of course he just does not let on about the final cost of carrying out those suggestions. After all, Jesus said in Matthew 10:36; “And a man’s foe shall be they of his household” NKJV.  Secondly, in John 4:44; “For Jesus Himself testified, that a prophet hath no honor in his own country” NKJV. Very sad for the perpetrators, but with God on your side; your attitude may very well be ‘whatever’ after you shed two drops of tears, wipe them off and move on.

As strange and as horrid as some of our trials could be, Our Saviour had warned us that the very things He went through we would go through. I know some people half perched on the wall of the kingdom of God, happily halting betwixt two opinions are disdainful of these possibilities. But the fact is that Christ does not really trust just any one with these peculiar trials. It takes a certain level of intimacy to be able to endure, remain alive and watch this; remain sane. I did not think I would ever be a candidate for these seemingly human nuances, until lo and behold, there I was trudging through the ‘valley of Baca’. Then this third scripture by our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ made sense. When Mary had come to fetch Jesus in the middle of His teaching, probably thinking he would be so excited to end everything and go outside to play with His siblings. Jesus said “For whosoever shall do the will of God, the same is my brother, and my sister, and my mother.” Mark 3:35, Matthew 12:50 NKJV.

On that note, I very well appreciated the 80-year-old Chinese woman who told me yesterday that she and everyone else around her loved me and my smile (when they did see the smile) and were praying for me. I definitely appreciate sweet little Lily (In her fifties) who just came back from Shanghai with a beautiful and specially hand crafted purse for me. As if that was not enough, we just got back from a star-studded restaurant on the west side, where Lily treated me and insisted we celebrate… Then there was Vivian yesterday, sweet Hispanic Vivian; I had just met her two weeks ago and yesterday she was also God’s hand extended. Then there were the bouquets of flowers half of them from anonymous. Then there is the girl with the lovely smile and nappy hair like mine who walked up to me with a bottle of perfume, and I still don’t know her name. I gave her a bear hug though. And the list goes on…

My very capable, awesome and faithful God has got the whole world in His Mighty Hands! And He sure uses it as He sees fit. Glory to His Majestic Name!

Fun and Fantastic Facetime on Facebook

I like Facebook, I really do.  Or should I say I like my Facebook friends. If ‘Facebook’ had a Facebook page, I would definitely ‘like’ Facebook or be the first to ‘friend’ Facebook. No matter how tautological that may sound, I hope you do get my point. Each of my Facebook  friend was carefully and thoughtfully accepted. It was not a random; let me rack up friends and prove my popularity kind of thing. If that was my aim, then I would have racked up about 6,000 of them in the first two months. And that rack would have included something like this; ‘Cappuccino Crazy’ and ‘Blue Lagoon’ to name but a few, with a spoon or crocodile for a face. I usually have zero tolerance for foolishness or dawdling, so I am quick to move on from such request. Others though legitimate names, I felt there really was no connection. Why be ‘Facebook friends’ if we never really communicate or care to find out what the other is doing and saying. What are we acquiring numbers for, who are we impressing. Unless you are an Organization or a really, really Popular/Public Figure  save your self the space and time.

So back to my lovely friends. It was beautiful that depending on what part of the world they were in, their well wishes rolled in simultaneously. First to roll in from the day before, was Australia (1 day and a couple of hours early they were!), Japan, Indonesia, Thailand, China, Russia, Pakistan, Singapore and beloved Israel (with those Hebraic letters on my ‘wall’ I felt a special blessing). I almost wrote to say wait, you are a day early but then I remembered, that we were all in different Time Zones. Then came France, Holland, Germany, London, Austria, Italy, Switzerland, Nigeria, Brazil, Portugal, Tunisia, Morocco, ; to name but a few. They were not just geographical locations, these were people whom I knew and had seen and met before. Who were able to share their story with me. So when they wrote in or called in, they had more than two words to say; for example: I am sending something to you, I am coming to see you, Are you well? Can i ask your advice on something really important? Where in the world are you? When are you coming to visit or Whatever happened to …?

Did I mention I like Facebook? Yeah, and I like my Facebook friends too!

Praise to God For His Awesome Works! (Psalm 66)

Posted on

Make a joyful shout to God, all the earth!

Sing out the honor of His name

Make His praise glorious.

Say to God, “How awesome are Your works!

Through the greatness of Your power

Your enemies shall submit themselves to You.

All the earth shall worship You

And sing praises to You;

They shall sing praises to Your name.”

Oh, bless our God you Peoples!

And make the voice of His praise to be heard,

Who keeps our soul among the living,

And does not allow our feet to be moved.

For You O God have tested us;

You have refined us as silver is refined

You brought us into the net;

You laid affliction on our backs.

You have caused men to ride over our heads;

We went through fire and through water;
